Coffee Prices Rise in Russia, Leading to Drop in Demand

The rising cost of coffee in Russia is starting to impact consumer demand, according to data from the analytics center Check Index. In January–February 2025, the median price of coffee increased by 15% compared to the same period in 2024, reaching 767 rubles.

Sales of whole-bean and capsule coffee have particularly declined. Whole-bean coffee purchases dropped by 5%, while its median price surged by 26% to 1,419 rubles. Capsule coffee sales fell by 12%, with prices rising 7% to 789 rubles.

In contrast, soluble and ground coffee remain more resilient. The median price of instant coffee rose by 15% to 384 rubles, with a 1% increase in the number of purchases. Ground coffee saw a 16% price rise to 548 rubles and a 6% increase in sales volume.

The shift toward online shopping is also becoming more pronounced. The median price of coffee purchased online rose by 13% to 1,062 rubles, while the number of purchases increased by 8%. This trend is largely driven by the growth of the e-grocery segment, particularly in regional markets.

At the same time, the number of retail outlets selling coffee declined by 6% year-on-year. Analysts attribute this to intense competition and the growing prevalence of home coffee machines and brewers. The spread of vending machines has also contributed to this change in consumer behavior.

The data was compiled by Check Index, the analytics division of Platforma OFD, Russia’s largest fiscal data operator. The company processes around 65 million receipts daily from more than 1.25 million online cash registers across the country.
